This can be a frustrating problem. Do I leave my 2007 version of Windows Live Mail there and put up with the problem or do I save all the emails in the
Users > John Smith > AppData > Local > Microsoft > Windows Live Mail folder
to a memory stick,
(Remember to go to "John Smith" folder then ORGANIZE, FOLDER AND SEARCH OPTIONS, VIEW tab, then tick "Show hidden files and folders" to show the AppData folder.)
and reinstall version 2007 again or the latest version?
Then put all the stored emails back into Windows Live Mail folder
There is a problem if you run Vista with the latest Windows Live Mail: for some reason you cannot make Hotmail run in it no matter how you try to set it up! It works alright in Windows7. Funny that isn't it?

SOLVING THE PROBLEM
This is how you correct the "could not perform this operation because the default mail client is not properly installed" problem.
1. In Vista go to "Start Search".
Type "regedit" and click "Enter".
Regeditor will open.
Left click the arrow to the left of folder HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Left click the arrow to the left of folder Software
Left click the arrow to the left of folder Classes
Right click the folder mailto
A window with a list of choices will appear.
Curser over "new".
Left click "String Value".
Double click "String Value".
In the window that appears type "URL Protocol".
Close Regeditor.
Your problem is now solved.
